This planning guide will be useful for helping you make choices and set priorities. It would be a good idea to set up a “clip” file or folder with pictures and ideas that you have gathered from web-sites, magazines, your own sketches or even photos of kitchens that you have personally seen and liked. We can take several ideas and put them together to design the perfect kitchen to suit your family’s needs and desires. Make a list of what you like and most importantly what you do not like about your current kitchen.
Are you going to use the same space, build an addition, or are you going to expand the kitchen into a space previously used for another purpose?
Now you will need to think about how you will be utilizing the space and how you would like it to look & function. Deciding which features are absolutely essential, and which features are optional, will help as we work through the planning and budget process.
Storage space is also often a priority for many families. Are you going to need a large pantry space, would you like pullout trays in the cabinets? Would you like a desk, work, or hobby area? Other features to think about are lighting, cabinet style & finish, sinks and faucets.
Kitchen remodels may include all new cabinets, flooring, lighting, plumbing fixtures, countertops, paint & trim work. A simpler and more cost-effective option for many people is to replace the countertops, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, and door & drawer pulls. Painting or refinishing of existing cabinetry is also possible.
